on friendships between women and men

One of my male coworkers recently expressed to me that he could not possibly begin to imagine that it was possible for men and women to be just friends.
I'm always a bit surprised when I encounter this idea.
And by "a bit surprised" I mean
WHAT DO YOU MEAN? HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY NOT BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT GENDERS CAN BE BUDS?

I guess people just live in different sorts of ways?
And in different circles friendships work differently?
He really seemed to think that there was no way that any friendship between a man and a woman who were both straight could be legitimate or functional.

I didn't like that he seemed to be intimating that I was a sex object and I should not expect men to hang around with me and not want to stick it in.
(thank god we are now facebook friends so he can link over to this and then I'll have to back up this in person...hmmm)

Ugh.
I understand that friendships between men and women can be harder to negotiate, but I think more than being possible, they are necessary!
How can we move anywhere near a gender-equal society without genders being able to be proper friends? Or even strong co-workers?
Not that I'm sure that this particular person has any desire for a gender-equal society.

Obviously in certain scenarios there can be attraction that needs to be acknowledged or dealt with or put aside or even just held onto because it can be a bit nice.
There are times when I like having a bit of crush on my friends, both women and men.
I mean crushes are just a sort of admiring, and spending time with people you admire is the best. And being excited to see someone and glad to spend time and thinking they're beautiful is not a bad thing.
The intent behind it is what defines it.

The idea behind this man's statements seemed to be that men could not be expected to not try to have sex with every woman ever. And that therefore women are not for having friendships with.
(which means, therefore, they aren't valid as people, does it not?)

Cool!

I'm not saying we shouldn't be careful of how we treat each other, and maybe you cannot expect people you know have feelings for you to be able to be your best friend.
I'm saying that OBVIOUSLY there are men who I can straight-up adore and not want to have sex with. And some of these men don't want to have sex with me either!
And yet I still 100% think they have so much to offer and want to speak to them and get advice from them and run ideas past them and collaborate on projects with them.
And maybe they even feel the same way about me!

MIRACLE.

Pretty sure I'm fairly spoiled with getting to hang out with mostly like-minded people in my every day life, and at work to just not get into things like politics or feminism (or godforbid, vegetarianism).

I don't like thinking about how many people out there have completely different opinions than I do.
Haaaaaa.
Exactly why I'm not active in politics or any of the other causes I do fully believe in.

I wish I'd been able to go to Slut Walk this weekend. Totally a cause I can get behind.

Lots of photos mashed up in here today.
Waiting for subway, streetcars over the past few days, 3 speed bar, outside of Unlovable with a couple of my favourite dude buds and co.
Lots of little outings, lots of socializing lately.
I did manage to go straight home after work last night but I didn't really get anything done. Baby steps, baby.

I want new glasses. Or new contacts. I don't want to have wear my glasses anymore. I want to be free.

okbluejaysletsplayball

I'm trying to be more on-the-ball in this blog for you guys. YOU'RE WELCOME.
shit, the amount of shit that I do for you.
Too bad it can't all be interesting but win some lose some.

Tonight is the Jays home opener and I'm working it (obviously) and tonnes of babes are going but they'll all be up on 500 and I'll be wanting to die with how annoying it's going to be on 100 level because it's just too busy to handle.
Whatever. I'm going to have a giant coffee and hope that a good mood ensues that I can ride until I can get the eff out of there.
Except I probably won't be done until midnight or 1 a.m... another fun thing about when the dome is exceptionally busy.
A Saskatoon band is playing with an awesome toronto band and I'd like to go to that. Hmmmmm. Hopefully!
Hopefully I make $300.
Come buy beer from me and give me a giant tip! Or at least a kiss on the lips. (just kidding, sick.)

Hey at least I like my hair today!

Boots!

I don't want to move far away from this neighbourhood, I kind of love it forever.

Happy 7th anniversary to you, attic apartment. To celebrate I'm going to cruise craigslist for new apartments!

I'm getting pretty excited at the idea of my new apartment.
I'm hoping and fingers crossing everything works out like I'm dreaming.
I made a detailed list of what we're looking for, in order to clarify and submit to the universe my desires. Gooooooo universe.

I would like to get a job some day where I didn't have to wear a uniform.
I'd like to get a job where I got to wear costumes. yeaaahh costumes.

work, hoops, dot, groceries, story of my life

My stomach is upset. Which I blame on Hoops. Obviously. And my other favourite bar which I'm going to stop naming it proper instead I will refer to it as The Dot. Because it is my favourite place to get locked-in to (in Britain this is what they call drinking after-hours, being a lock-in.)
I LOVE BEING A LOCK-IN.
It is my favourite passtime.
I left the dot last night at reg closing time and everyone was like "where are you going?" haahaaa classic.
Actually last night was a good indicator of my life lately. Work, Hoops, Dot, groceries at Metro at 3 a.m.

Pretty perfect.

I can say with certainty that I have crushes on pretty much everyone I hang out with at the dot.
This is kind of lovely. And not my fault because everyone is great. And babely. Why do babes travel in packs? Split yourselves up so I don't look so fickle, hey?

My bartender-friend is super lovely. He will be called Fisherman. Why? Because he looks like one. Obviously. He also has a sweet beard.
Actually he kind of looks like a voyageur. Voyageur/lumberjack/fisherman, which is funny considering how he is actually kind of big baby. hahahaaawwwwwww adorable!
Fisher told me that I was being very funny the other night. I know it took me ten minutes to order a drink and that I kept going on about how I am allergic to gluten and diiiicks, and I told them all about how I won all the Junos. So, he's probably. Favourite compliment.
I'll take more pictures of him later for you.
Aww man, I'm supposed to go to the dot tonight again with Prune. Hopefully all of my crushes will be there!

haaa our one friend there let it slip to me that he has a boat and now all I refer to him as is "BOAT"
"I can't hear you over how much I'm thinking about your boat"
"Look, I like you and everything, but please draw me a sketch of me hanging out on your boat"
"Is your boat excited to meet me?"
"How boat are boat boat boat in the boat after boat and boat-boat"
etc.

I think Boat's pretty excited that I'm his new friend.

Carla Ghee had been at Hoops with me earlier (see first photo for evidence!!) and then she turned up at Dot with babe in arm. And by babe in arm I mean babe on arm. Carla Ghee and I like two things very much in common:
1. TEQUILA. (though I like mine with tonic, there it's your new favourite drink, you're welcome)
2. BABES

we also like other things the same but those two are tops. And hoops, and ghosts that say "heyyyy" and norman.

Carla Ghee and I tipped over backwards upside down on our barstools which is totally couth and proper bar etiquetter.
I would know because I know bars. Also, I think it impressed all the babes how flexible we are.

And now my back hurts!

I tried on some random guy's glasses. They looked small-ish on his face. Not so on my gremlin-mug. My vintage frames looked very sweet on him. Too bad no photo.

I have a really good ponytail today. it was better before but it is still alright now. And I did a good audition. Whatever, I didn't even have to say any words so it wasn't terribly difficult. Too bad because MAN am I good at saying words. You have no idea how many words I've said in my day.

Haa last night at work I was feeling particularly jovial and good-natured and I was joking with customers (I am amazing at joking with customers when I am in a good mood. Like sick-good at making obvious, old-man jokes with them, but in a cute way. When I am in this good mood, I make the most money. I wish I could bottle this mood.) and this older man cackle-laughed right when I cackle-laughed about our shared joke and it surprised both of us a little bit I think which made us laugh harder.
That sort of thing makes my life, ya know?

oh yeah, so I've been developing this terrible cackle-laugh for probably a year and half. I like it because it terribly rude/jarring/funny/off-putting/ugly. I find that sort of thing hilarious.
Unfortunately it is now pretty much my reg laugh. siigh.
This replaces my old gaspy-squeal unable-to-breathe laugh which I was prone to in the past. Actually, this still happens mostly only when Niki's around though.  I think I've laughed harder/more with Niki than I have with anyone ever. I think Niki laughs more than anyone though. And usually it's at you!

I've been trying lately to develop a soft and lovely sexy tinkle-jingle trill of an amused giggle but it's not going as well as it could. Give it time though, I believe in me!

Yeah so I was thinking about applying for a job at Hoops, which would probably be AWESOME. except it would also probably be awful. Imagine if I grew to hate Hoops? That'd be the worst. I love it there.
Also last night I for some reason decided to show off all my awesome dance moves so I'm pretty sure they don't want me anyway!
Their fault for having WHAT IS LOVE? by haddaway. ahhaahaaa DanceMix.
Also, yes, I danced just like Ricky:

OBVIOUSLY.
such sweet moves.

this cat likes to be spooned in my arms. She waits beside my head for me to wake up. Sometimes flops down onto my face. cool!

I think I'd make a cute boy. Just saying.

I didnotdidnotdidnot want to get up this morning but I got up and got going and did my make up and everything like a responsible person. You're proud of me, I can tell.
This meant that I deserved the tulips and latte I got on my way home this afternoon.

The tulips are inspiration to clean up my apartment more (I did a solid bit on it yesterday when I was in an awesome mood for no reason!)... we'll see if that happens. They are a lovely light purple.
Life is great because it's sunny out, the window is wide open, and the cat is all warm and cuddly from sleeping in the sun.

actra awards 2011 round-up

Everyone kind of looks great in these big hot rollers, hey?

Okay, in the spirit of getting around to blogging things closer to when they actually happened, I bring you the photos from Friday night's ACTRA awards! You're welcome!

I only arrived 45 minutes later than I planned, nbd. Classsssssic. Mostly due to how I just felt like lying around, not getting dressed. I guess I was already in kind of a temper.
I was in a temper until part way through the award ceremony maybe.. and then there were ridiculously touching speeches when the awards were accepted as both best performance awards went to actors who had recently passed away.
Fairly upsetting. I think we were all a bit taken aback by how sad it was. Also, lovely.

My buds, Boys Who Say No were the musical guests and that was pretty adorable.

aaaaaand of course, my old pal Nick was nominated for an award and the clip they showed from his movie also featured music from his band, Sweet Thing. Lovely!
I think I'm going to go see that movie, which is called New Year when it plays at the Royal right away here. Who's in?

It was the martinis that made my night quite a bit better. I know it's terrible to rely on alcohol as a social crutch or as a mood elevator, but mannnnnnnnnnn. It's just a phase I'm going through (a very, very long, party-all-the-time phase).

See, Norman is on my team on this double-fisting mood-elevating team.

I said "make grouchy faces" and that was what She came up with! haaa (also, She is called She as she will not agree to be nicknamed Bess so we're on hold for what blogname she'll have so She is the best I've got right now).

Only one drink in your hand? Odd man out!

mood=elevated!

requisite actra backdrop photos!!

a woman in the drink line-up complimented me and asked where I got my dress and I relayed that I got it at a clothing swap and then she told me "you should shop at Winners. you gotta go to Winners." What? Helpful?

She went and got her hair done beforehand. HOW FANCY. obviously, I was jealous. Except I was also so happy with my stupid curls not immediately falling out that I was only medium-jealous.

yes, I did wear my mini-flask necklace. Ever classy, ever classy.

you're welcome for taking this picture while you were looking at your feet!

I feel the need to post pictures where I look like a little gremlin. I can't stress enough that I am mostly a little gremlin in real life. I just carefully select pictures that make it look otherwise for blog.

Norman, adorbs. I mean, badass. Whichever!

Last night Norman and I got asked if we were PICs, which apparently stands for Partners In Crime. OBVIOUSLY. Also, Norman is maybe the only person who parties more than I do. Man, Norman will just party by himself at Hoops if no one is around to join him. In fact, he somewhat prefers it that way.

("Toronto is making you weird. The longer you live there, the weirder you get." - my mother on my recent Hoops fetish)

While exiting the washroom I remember that we ran into our friend outside the washroom last year. Oh god, now I need a blogname for him too. Jeeeezus. Ummm. Let's call him Butterface. No, wait, that's rude. Let's call him SOUL PATCH. perfect. ahahahahah! hah! ahaha!

Anyway, the basic backstory on Soulpatch is that we used to be involved. By which I mean, we tried to date but it turned out that we couldn't stand each other and he drove me insane but also I still kind of adored him but he wore a t-shirt that said "the head foundation please give generously" and he had a soul patch and wore socks with his sandals and I wanted to punch him pretty often even though I also found most of this kind of funny(? sort of? who remembers!).
The best part about Soulpatch is that he has a really remarkably unshakable self-confidence (thank god, if you're going to hang around with me). Probably stemming from being in an HBO movie with JTT (the reason I first spoke to Soulpatch at all hahahaa classic).
So we didn't "date" for long but we did continue "hanging out" over quite some time, maybe? Who remembers, this was years ago now.

(ssshhhuuuttttt upppp hair why don't you always look like that?)

These days Soulpatch has been in a longterm relationship forever and a half and I'm still exactly how I've always been (jk? in a good way?) and now when I see him I just adore the hell out of him. Why? Who the f knows! I just find him so familiar and ridiculous and I just want to smush his face, ya know? and he still thinks I'm great (obviously) but we aren't close buds or anything. Maybe sometime.

anyway, as we were exiting the washroom I said "aww I wish Soulpatch were here, remember we ran into him last year?" and then THERE HE WAS, right where we saw him last year.
They may or may not have set it up so it happened like that but it was still super bizarre since I had juuuust thought of him!

These days he cut his hair and grew a beard and is wearing plaid, wtf?!
me: "Soulpatch... are you now someone I'd be attracted to?"
soulpatch: "um, I'm pretty sure you've been attracted to me in the past"
me: "okay, attracted yes, but now you're actually my type"
ha, actually I think what I actually said was waaaay ruder. Way, way ruder.
And we wonder why I'm single!
(just kidding no one wonders, so rude and impatient!)

I didn't really dance. But we did party. Did I dance?
I drank too much.

I was definitely not the only one. But hopefully I mostly only said normal things to most people?

We did have a time. Didn't chase down any celebrities at all, really... I did look at that lead guy from The Listener because he really does have such beautiful eyes. LIKE HE CAN READ MY THOUGHTS (and my thoughts are that I'd like to hit that).

I like to not tell people about the obnoxious faces I'm going to be making the photo beside them.

little creeper gremlin haaaha.

Now it is me who is the cute one! For once!

Tonight we watch the Oscars!
I'm happy because I like watching stupid things while drinking and Mrs. and Arrow are having people over and going over to their house is one of my favourite things and they are some of my favourite people so obviously I get to look forward to it! Obviously!
